                          What's New in Energy

How knowledgeable are you about what's happening in the utility industry today?

Our Department of Energy Affairs committee would like to test your knowledge! Specifically, do you know the current United States Secretary of Energy? Dr. Steven Chu was appointed by President Obama in January 2009. Dr. Chu was also awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in Physics (1997).

What is the weatherization assistance program? The U.S. Department of Energy's Weatherization Assistance Program helps to install energy efficiency measures in the homes of qualifying homeowners. This free service averages a cost of $6500 per home.

When should you recycle an old washing machine? If your washer is over 10 years old, it's time for a replacement. With new qualified washers, you'll save about $145 a year on your utility bills. Fridges and freezers made before 1993 are inefficient. A pre-1993 unit costs $100 per year in electricity—twice as much as a new qualified model. And fridges and freezers from the 1970s cost four times more to operate. Is there an old model draining the budget in your house? If you purchase an energy-efficient products such as washer, fridge, home humidifier, air conditioner etc. renewable energy system for your home, you may be eligible for a federal tax credit.

We encourage you to visit the Ohio Dept. of Energy website. This is an easy way to stay informed about what's going on in our industry.
